In opFlow what is Other (Other)

Using opFlow to identify what is using all our bandwidth. Why does it show Other?

Small company with a Cisco 800 series router and not much else.

      Hi,

      opFlow uses a TopN principle to summarise data, when you are looking at certain screens it will be showing Top10, if Other is your top user of traffic then it likely means that the traffic is many smaller flows of traffic.  

      To show more, click on Advanced and then change the TopN to a higher number and then select filter.

      You can also see the details of the traffic in the Views -> Conversation Summary or Conversation Matrix, depending on which version of opFlow you are using.

      The TopN views will also help, Views -> TopN, and then look at the different summary types.

        As Keith said the goal of opFlow's summarization is to combine 'individually unimportant' inputs into one 'Other' bucket, so that those tiny bits don't  clutter the display and hide more important/prominent data. The  logic is that the first N or "Top N" inputs (based on the sort criterion) are shown, and everything else is lumped up into 'Other'. Clearly the 'Other' bucket may then bubble up quite highly in that Top N display; 'Other' at the top would indicate to me that no single particular app or source is "sticking out" and that it's mostly small conversations generating the majority of the traffic. So far, so good.

        However, opFlow 3.0.5 had a small bug: On the main dashboard page your choice for TopN was only applied to the graph and chart, not to the table in the bottom right corner.

        This has been fixed in today's version 3.0.6.
